Senators Moreno and Slotkin propose banning Chinese-linked vehicles and software from the US market starting 2027
11 Jun 2026

A sweeping bipartisan proposal could fundamentally reshape the American automotive landscape. Introduced on April 29, 2026, the Connected Vehicle Security Act was co-sponsored by Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, uniting both parties around a rare shared cause: keeping Chinese-linked vehicles, parts, and software out of the US market.
Restrictions on vehicles and software from China and other adversarial nations would kick in by 2027. Hardware restrictions follow in 2030, giving automakers and suppliers a staggered runway to restructure supply chains. The phased timeline reflects lawmakers' intent to balance security urgency with practical industry reality.
General Motors and the United Auto Workers both backed the bill. Their joint endorsement carries real weight, bringing a major automaker and the country's largest auto labor union into alignment on a single policy goal. That kind of labor-management unity doesn't come easy, and it makes the proposal considerably harder to dismiss.
Enforcing the new restrictions would fall to the Department of Commerce, which would evaluate connected components for ties to adversarial nations. Proponents argue that internet-connected vehicles can harvest sensitive location and infrastructure data, effectively turning cars into surveillance tools. Cutting off adversarial-linked technology at the source addresses those risks before any vehicle reaches American roads.
For dealers and consumers, passage could mean a tighter supply of lower-cost imports over the coming years. Businesses across the auto supply chain are already weighing how fast they can shift sourcing strategies to meet the new thresholds. If enacted, the legislation would rank among the most significant interventions in automotive trade policy in decades.
